screenshot of progress for my front cover

This is the progress of my front cover in which I created. The first image shows the background in which I used. I blurred the whole layer in order to create a distinct background. However I then added the same photo on a separate layer to have my model focused.  For this layer I deleted my background just leaving my model to apply on the top. Furthermore I added my masthead. I then started to add my subheadings and my barcode to add the features of a magazine.

Screen shots of progress for my billboard

When creating my billboard I decided I wanted to add a slant onto my picture in order to make it a lot more fun for my target audience. I felt This would engage them more as they were younger and would want something fun to look at and interest them. It would also help to captivate their attention. In order to do this I had to right click on my image and then click the skew icon. This then allowed me to play around with the angle until I was happy. I then placed the image where I felt it fitted into the page correctly. i then decided to go against this decision as i felt it didn't fit with my target audience and did not look professional.

This is the progress of my billboard. Despite it being plain and simple I felt this gave an effective and professional feel for the target audience.

pitch feedback

I asked members of my class to examine my pitch and give me feedback accordingly on my ideas for my creations in order for me to improve my ideas.

My competition

The competition in which I find the biggest is 'teen prom'. Despite this being an American magazine it has built a large, wide audience that has become extremely popular. I would like to challenge a lot of their features while also copying them in order to match my audience and are it a regional piece. I feel the layout of the front cover matches the style and character in which I myself want to create for my own magazine. However the contents page is not something in which I want to copy as a whole. I find it boring and won't appeal  to my target audience. I will therefore challenge these conventions. I will challenge these by adding a more vibrant and upbeat contents page that will appeal more to my audience a lot more. I will split this page accordingly to make it exciting to my audience.

WIX template research

I conduct some research on the website WIX in which I would use in order to create my website as part of my A2 coursework. I looked at several templates in which I could use in order to complete this piece. I started by looking at templates in which I could use as an example or focus my ideas around.
These are several of the template examples I came across that I could use. All three of these follow different styles. Despite liking the layout of them all, I feel the first to follow a sophisticated layout that is clear and easy to understand. The third design is my favorite as I feel t fits in a lot more with my target audience as it is fun and has a lot of character to the page. I feel I could use the different titles to advertise the different sections to the prom industry i.e. hair, makeup and dresses.

In order to gather a wider perspective of the templates I could use I decided to look at some blank templates. When looking at the first design I thought it was very bland and boring and therefore would not appeal to my target audience. The last design I feel does not match the style in which I am trying to create. However i feel the second adds the style and character I need to appeal to the target audience.

Flat plans and rationales

When creating my products there were several things in which I had to take into consideration including the layout and language of my magazine in which will be my final piece. I had to last keep in mind of the target audience in order to make sure that I was appealing to them and they would therefore buy or use my products. There were 6 points in particular and these were;
  • composition/ framing
  • colour scheme
  • fonts
  • layout
  • mise en scene
  • language/register
The colours in which I plan to use will be the same for all three of my creations in order to keep the continuity throughout featuring pinks, purples and blues while using black and grey to keep it sophisticated and neutralize the colours.
I feel this will draw the attention of the target audience. I also feel the use of black and grey will draw a lot of attention and focus to on the images of the colored dressed that will be featured. I want to us simple yet effective fonts that will stand out, be easy to read and blend well with my genre. I will stay away from handwritten fonts as I feel they are really hard to read. When considering language and register I wanted to stay away away from a very formal communication with my audience as I feel it would creator a social distance between me and the reader. Alternately I do not wish to take an informal tone of being too colloquial. Being in the middle would engage my target audience and also match the genre. When thinking of the mise en scene I had to look at feature such as the lighting and the props. I wish to use a range of lighting in order to show different sides to the dresses, hair etc. The costumes in which I plan to use all features the different types of prom dresses in a range of styles and colours to appeal to a wider target audience. The makeup on each model will vary depending on the dress and hair in which she has. For  example a simple, light pink dress will have a neutral eye and simple makeup. However a bold bold dress will have a mare daring lip or bolder eyes. I don't feel that I would use props in my images in order for the focus to be solely on the outfit that he model is wearing.
When laying out my Billboard I will take inspiration from this billboard. I feel this is proportionally set out while featuring several image and the required information. The images will be placed on the right side of the page with the writing on the left. I feel this will be noticed more as people had from left to right. The name of my product will be located on the top of the page on the left for it  to be noticeable and recognizable to the target audience. The font from my masthead and my information will be different to add character to the billboard. However they will also be easy to read while also standing out from the page.
When laying out my magazine I wanted to create something that challenged the generic conventions of a magazine while also adding my own touch. The colour scheme will be the same as detailed above to keep the continuity and so the target audience will also know what to expect when reading the magazine. On the front cover of my magazine I will place my dominant image underneath my masthead with my issue number and price below. This will be framed by the sell lines to show the dominance.  Down the left side of the page I will place my cover lines which are even spaced and will be in several fonts in order to add range and character to the page. My main cover line will be a little more central than the others while also not following the evenly spaced gaps. This will be about the model from the dominant page and the article in which she is involved in. The barcode is then located int he bottom right corner.  The mise en scene of this piece will vary as I want to take professional photos with a blurred background or a smile background. However here are some images to have the background  moved or to have a plain one in order to add focus on the dresses/ hair and makeup represented. I don't think props will be used as I want the focus to be on the models.
The contents page of my magazine will also be evenly spaced to make it uncluttered and easy to read. At the top left side of the page I will place the 'content' logo and placed above this a tiny replicate of my masthead logo will be placed on the top to represent the magazine. Once again below this will be the issue number and website as this was a generic convention I came across several times. An image of my front cover will then be placed on a slanted angle to tie everything together. On the bottom left side of the page I will place my editors note which will detail my favorite article in the magazine and a brief couple of sentences about it. The main cover line will be featured in the top, right corner of the page through the use of  a image which is shown on the right. This will be the same model as my front cover but a different image. Below this and taking up the rest of the page will be the features in which are in the magazine. These will be in a three column structure.
Finally is my double page spread I which the article title will be spread across the top of the page.  In a scattered array I will place images linked to the article I will be writing about. Fitted around these images will be the article itself. I will place a kicker in order to engage the target audience in the page. Finally the article wouldn't be wrote in a large chunk of text as I feel this puts the target audience off form reading it. The images I will use on the piece will be alternative. For example the two pictures below are images in which could incorporate regional businesses to make the magazine a lot more personal. This will also help to adverse the companies and allow there name to be branched out.

When laying out my website I want to create a fun and vibrant piece that would appeal to my target audience. Across the top of the page I will place my masthead in order for people know and recognize the band. On the other side of the page I will place the social media links in order for the audience to know they have social media and could fine them. the smaller boxes below would be links to certain pages i.e. makeup, hair, dress and advice. I feel these would make the website a lot more personal to the target audience. The larger boxes bellow will feature Images advertising the certain sections in order to intrigue my target audience.
